I showed up an hour and ten minutes early for work this morning. Anyone would think I love my job. Well here's to not meeting any more cranky old men who dislike Malaysians and Hyundai's for no good reason. If you think your life is hard, imagine that your house and pets and everything you've ever known had been washed away in an instant. Oddly enough, those people that have experienced such an event are the ones who complain the least.

On a more positive note, I am going to join the barage of bogans that will reign down on Sydney Showground tomorrow. I will be the one without an Australian flag. It may just be my last opportunity to witness Iggy Pop giving a semi-decent performance without a shirt, before such a scene is outlawed as indecent. A lesson to anyone considering taking up drug use, you will age quickly, and it will not be graceful.

Speaking of grace, my family were surprised with a one time performance by the infamous Dok Holiday, DJ extraordinaire, this last Saturday evening. Leaving his decks at home, the dashing dread-headed DJ gave his finest rendition of Tenacious D's 'Tribute' with the help of a skilled, but hitherto unknown, guitarman. The mike stand remained intact, just. It was an instant hit. In the performers own words, he was 'born to sing at this party', and a marvellous tribute to a tribute. The evenings celebrations were capped off with a dramatic display of fireworks (real, not metaphorical), some sentimental words, a misunderstood work of art, hangovers, noise complaints, younger brother's tales of exploding men, and a strong desire to get into the pyrotechnics industry.

Here's hoping tomorrow's festivites, Iggy Pop's performance aside, will be as memorable as a humble family gathering. Just for one day I may leave my feelings about the mutilation of the English language at home, and bust out a 'Yeeew!' or two.

For now it's back to the phones. If you feel like calling someone today, may it be a friend and not your insurance company.

Hello old friend..

And no I do not mean Rolf. I wonder how he is doing these days? It's been a while since we've lived in the tall house. Some days I would hear strange noises in the early hours, and when I took the boys out the back in the morning, there would be a puddle near the garden hose, as though someone had showered with it. My laundry was always left open, so if Rolf was indeed a homeless person living under my house (rather than a figment of my imagination, or a family of possums), at least I know he had clean clothes.

These days my little family are living in a cute cottage style home that is much closer to the ground, and does not have a host of ticks living in the trees and undergrowth. I am working on a pretty garden.. I shall have to post photos once it starts to take shape. I have been a busy beaver, painting walls white, and building shelves (with the help of Mr T). Some crazy person, who occupied this house before us, painted over the lovely timber mantle. So now this crazy person has attempted to scrape it all off. It's not quite done yet, looks a bit shabby, but it will look pretty when it is complete. Again, photos to be posted at some point.

More recently, I paid a visit to some friends in this amazing little place called Melbourne. I can't believe I had never been there before. I will definitely be going back. It was a very inspiring trip, and I think there will be a project or two that comes out of it... Watch this space.

Happy new year to the blogging world.. One of my resolutions for this year is remembering that I have a blog, and using it.

Orange Sky

It's eery waking up to see a orange beam of light from the cracks in the blinds, and to go outside to see an orange sky, fog, and trees that look like they're alive. It's disappointing when the digital camera you're using corrects the odd colour scheme and produces a photo that could almost convince you that you're hallucinating. I'm taking a photo on an SLR I borrowed from my Dad, but I have to wait for the film to be used up and developed. Will there be a photo in there of an orange sky? Or did I just imagine it?

Things that make me go hmmm...

There is a hobo living under my house. Last night he broke in to have a shower. I shall name him Rolf.

And now for something completely different..

It's a race! Keeping up pace and making sure I follow the rules. We must be green, we must buy organic, we must have the perfect lawn!

A new topic

Beauty strikes me at the most unusual moments in time, and in the most unexpected places. Accidental inspiration. Dark industrial columns with just a little light shining through from the ether. The darkness promises to give way to the light of a better, brighter day.. maybe all that's needed is the pull of a cord.
